As a credit card issuer that has a reputation for exclusive rewards and services, American Express offers a range of credit cards that are almost immediately given esteem because of the name.
There are also many banks now partnered with Amex that offer even more reward options, especially for people who are looking to earn frequent flyer points quickly.
But this does not mean that they will be a good choice for everyone, so it is important to weigh up both the pros and cons before deciding to get an American Express card.
The Best Of American Express Credit Cards
One of the best things about American Express credit cards is that they generally offer significantly more points per dollar than any other kind of credit card.
The American Express Velocity Platinum card, for example, allows cardholders to earn up to 3 points per $1, which is 1.75 points more than Virgin’s own platinum High Flyer card.
Similarly, the 1.5 Qantas frequent flyer points per dollar offered on the Qantas American Express Ultimate card is on par with other card providers, many of whom have Amex options to increase the points potential.
There are also a number of other benefits that come from having an American Express card, including:
- Concierge services
- A high level of travel support and assistance
- Exclusive shopping offers; and
- Membership gifts
Some reward partners will also give priority access or airport lounge benefits to American Express cardholders, adding to your status when travelling almost anywhere in the world so it can pay off to have one in your wallet.
The Worst American Express Card Features
The most noticeable disadvantage to American Express cards is usually the annual fees, which can get as high as $400 or more for individual cards.
While the Gold Ascent credit card is one that offers no annual fee, most other American Express cards currently available have costs of $149 or more.
